The poems were collected by Kshitimohan Sen from both written and oral sources. Tagore worked with Evelyn Underhill on the book, which includes translations from an unpublished version of 116 songs by Ajit Kumar Chakravarty. The collection has been translated into Persian and Kurdish. While the language of the English version is now archaic, updated translations by Robert Bly and David Masterman are available.
